The Writing Center’s areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, essay and research writing, organizing speeches, topic brainstorming, developing and supporting stances, outlining, improving grammar and punctuation skills, using MLA and APA formats. All levels of writers from all discipline areas are encouraged to visit the Writing Center for assistance.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Writing Center is to provide a comfortable, supportive, and instructional environment in which writers work closely with writing assistants to develop and strengthen communication skills. The Center hosts a community of writers, readers, speakers, and thinkers working in a collaborative effort to understand and appreciate the exciting dynamics of the English language. The goals of this effort are to improve communication skills and to promote students' ownership of their writing. The Center is open to all DSU students who desire to enrich their language skills and become more confident communicators.
Writing Center assistants work with students one-to-one on an appointment basis and with walk-ins whenever possible. Group appointments also are available if students are working on a paper together or on the same assignment.
