Statement Regarding Operational Audit
This morning, May 16, 2014, there was an article in the Dickinson Press regarding an operations audit of Dickinson State University. The article did not include some key points including the fact that the report did NOT include any findings of error in enrollment reporting nor any instances of miscoding in student residency.
The report released by the North Dakota State Auditor this week was an operational audit of Dickinson State University. The state auditor is required to review every state agency once every two years. An operational audit looks at processes and procedures, and reviewers provide suggestions for the agency to improve effectiveness. Although the report was released this week, the review of Dickinson State University occurred last year and the reviewers considered information from the time period between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2013. In the report, reviewers suggested that DSU consider strengthening processes related to enrollment reporting and student residency coding.
As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, DSU had already developed and implemented procedures and practices relating to enrollment reporting and student residency coding prior to the report’s being finalized. These increased controls, were developed and implemented before fall 2013 to ensure state and federal reports are correct.
