Communication in the modern world depends on the written word, and the person who possesses the knowledge, the skill, and the ability to write well will always be in demand, whether it be to produce technical manuals, television or movie scripts, newspaper articles, or scholarly writing for advanced degrees. Clear, concise and accurate writing has always been a marketable skill and will remain so. The enjoyment and understanding of literature is fundamental for good writing. Our daily lives are enriched and enhanced by our literary skills.

The Department of Language and Literature offers courses that form a major cornerstone of a liberal arts education at Dickinson State University. The programs of study in the department help improve the students’ abilities to be able to write and think critically and imaginatively as citizens of a global community and understand the languages and cultures that contribute to the global fabric of our society.

Each degree program offers a sequence and range of courses to provide students with the knowledge and skills for satisfying careers and experiences in literature and modern languages (Spanish and German).

Students who receive a bachelor’s degree in education with majors and minors from the Department of Language and Literature have the choice of teaching at the middle school or high school level, and with the addition of an advanced degree, may go on to teach at the university level. Graduates may also choose to enter professions of law, counseling, political science or the ministry.

Students interested in writing careers, such as journalism, public relations, creative writing or editing may complete their first step with degree programs in writing, journalism or literature. Those who combine their majors with a minor in language or literature enhance their employment opportunities because of the importance of strong communication skills in all areas of the professional world.
