The
Department of Teacher Education offers programs in two major areas: Teacher
Education and Psychology.
Teacher Education
Excellent teachers are of vital importance
to the future of America and its children. The Department of Teacher
Education, in cooperation with academic departments across the campus,
offers high quality teacher education programs in elementary education
and in numerous secondary education subject areas.
The Teacher Education Program at the University is organized
around the conceptual framework, “Teachers as Reflective Decision-Makers.” The
primary goal and mission of the Teacher Education Program continues to
involve helping prospective teachers to become effective decision-makers
who base decisions on a well-developed philosophy of education.
Psychology
The Department of Teacher Education offers
both major and minor programs of study in psychology. The psychology
programs prepare individual for careers in various areas, including social
services agencies, the criminal justice system, hospitals, clinics, and
other mental health organizations. The psychology programs are also highly
appropriate for those who wish to prepare themselves for graduate study
in theoretical or applied psychology. Teacher Education students also
complete several psychology courses as part of the professional education
curriculum.
