DSU Presents Alcohol Awareness Through the Arts Events

During the week of Oct. 7-13, Dickinson State University will join colleges and universities across the nation in recognizing National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week. In addition to Alcohol Awareness through the Arts programming, the Division of Student Development holds numerous activities for students and the public. This year’s theme is “Stop at the Buzz,” encouraging students to drink responsibly or not at all. All events are free of charge and open to everyone.

Alcohol Awareness Through the Arts is an annual series of events designed to illuminate the dangers of binge drinking. All programming is student-driven and student-directed, with the support of faculty mentors. A collection of visual art works by students will be displayed in the Student Center from Oct. 1-12. The exhibit also includes two videos produced by students.

Other activities to be held during the week include:

Sunday, Oct. 7, from 8-10 p.m., the Division of Student Development will host a non-alcoholic party featuring popular drinking games in the Student Center ballroom.

Monday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., a drunk driving simulation will take place on a course outside the Student Center. Participants will have the opportunity to drive a go-cart that is also partially controlled by a remote operator. The remote operator can alter the speed and steering of the go-cart, thus simulating the impaired judgment caused by alcohol use.

Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., in the Student Center ballroom, there will be a “Reverse Town Hall Meeting,” during which a group of panelists will ask questions of the audience on a variety of topics surrounding alcohol abuse. There will also be an opportunity for audience members to question panelists.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 9 p.m. the movie “Crash” will be shown in Beck Auditorium.

Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m., the Alcohol Awareness Through the Arts performance will take place in the Student Center ballroom. The performance focuses on the dangers of binge drinking and features public speeches given by students under the mentorship of Karen Nelson, DSU adjunct instructor of communication; choral music directed by Ken Williams, DSU associate professor of music; a reader’s theatre consisting of a one act play, poetry reading and creative writing, mentored by Pattie Carr, director of the DSU Wellness Program; and visual art pieces by students under the mentorship of Marilyn Lee, DSU assistant professor of art.

Friday, Oct 12, at 9 p.m. the DSU Night Hawks will sponsor “grocery bag bingo” in the Student Center ballroom.

Saturday, Oct. 13, the week wraps up with a dance sponsored by the Campus Activity Board from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Student Center ballroom.
