Distance Education Library Services
Basic Information

=====================================================

Stoxen Library is pleased to provide you with library services while you are enrolled in Dickinson State University programs of study. Distance education students and faculty are faced with unique challenges in obtaining needed library materials to supplement their classroom experience and to conduct research. This guide has been prepared to inform you of Stoxen Library services and to assist you in searching for and obtaining materials needed for your research assignments.

Library Cards: All patrons of Stoxen Library, including distance education patrons, must obtain a Dickinson State University ID. A DSU ID will be mailed to you. If you do not receive this ID, please call Student Affairs at (701) 483-2090 to inquire.

LIBRARY SERVICES CAN BE PROVIDED ONLY IF A VALID DSU ID NUMBER IS ACTIVATED by a member of the Library staff. To activate your ID submit the form electronically at: http://dickinsonstate.com/form_library.asp

(You must reactivate your DSU ID with the Library at the beginning of each semester.)

Overdues and Fines: Fines and replacement fees will be charged for overdue or lost materials. See My Library Account on the Library web page for further information.

Locating books, videos, and other materials: It is recommended that you use ODIN as your first choice to search for library materials. You can search ODIN, via the Library web page, to discover materials in the Stoxen Library collections as well as other libraries around the state.

Locating Articles: Numerous journal and magazine article databases are available via the Stoxen Library web page. When accessing these databases you may need to logon. Use your DSU ID (7 digits, no ‘W’) and your last name for login.

Some, but not all articles in these databases are full-text.

Interlibrary Loan: Interlibrary loan is a cooperative system by which libraries share materials with each other. We ask that you direct all your interlibrary loan requests to Stoxen Library. Please do not burden your local library with your requests as processing interlibrary loan requests can be costly.

Stoxen Library will attempt to fill all your interlibrary loan requests for library materials. Sometimes this can be a lengthy process, especially for distance patrons. To save yourself valuable time, check the in-house collections of your local libraries for items which you may be able to borrow. Your local library may also have standard reference sources that could prove helpful in your research activities; however, note that Stoxen Library purchases a variety of Online Reference Resources for which remote access is available via the Library web page.

Look Here For More Information about Interlibrary Loan.

When sending an interlibrary loan request for an item held by Stoxen Library, please add a note that indicates the item should be mailed to you.

QUESTIONS: If you have any questions relating to library services, call the Library at 701-483-2135 and identify yourself as a distance education patron. Library hours are listed at: http://www.dickinsonstate.com/hours.asp

You may also correspond with the librarians via email.
