All-DAC Honors
The Blue Hawks season ended in disappointing fashion tonight at Scott Gym at the hands of Minot State, 84-73 in overtime. An enthusiastic capacity crowd saw DSU trail the Beavers from the early minutes of the game, falling behind by as much as 15 points, recover to an extent, but limp into half-time still down 38-26. Dickinson State could manage just seven-of-26 (26%) in the opening frame and they committed 14 turnovers.
After the break, the Hawks came right at the Beavers and eventually tied the game at 41 (outscoring MSU 15-3) with 13:19 left in the game. After trading the lead for the next few minutes, the Blue Hawks went ahead at the 9:32 mark on two Nate Lebsock free-throws, a lead that DSU built to as high as seven points over the next seven minutes. MSU finally tied the game with 2:30 left and seized a two-point advantage, 68-66 with 1:11 to go. After a single free-throw pulled the Hawks within one point, they got the ball back and had one final opportunity--and they did not waste it. Lebsock’s three-ball from the deep corner put the Blue Hawks up 70-68 with just five ticks of the clock remaining.
Minot State called time-out, and set their offense. The ball was dribbled quickly up the court to DSU’s left flank where it was lobbed to the basket toward the 6’ 7” Shaun Johnson; he controlled the pass well enough to guide it into the hoop as time expired.
DSU’s best chance, as it turned out, eluded them in the waning seconds of regulation. MSU blitzed the Hawks for 14 points while scoring only three more of their own. In another event adding to DSU’s anguish, Tomaul Hawkins (14 points, 10 rebounds) fell to the floor late in overtime and suffered an Achilles tendon injury.
Lebsock was the team’s scoring leader with 21 tallies, with Fred Scheltinga’s (16) and Sean Burnham’s (13) being two other players to reach at least 10 points. The Hawks out-rebounded the Beavers 42 to 32, but committed 27 turnovers on the night and Minot State was credited with 13 steals. DSU did shoot well in the second half of the game (16-of-31, 52%), and certainly they had their chances to win and advance to the DAC Tournament championship game, but it just wasn’t to be.
DSU Shoots 52% in Second Half to Eliminate Jamestown College, 69-51

A good team defense by the Blue Hawks--next up Minot State at Scott Gym Wednesday at 7:30 pm |
The Dickinson State men avenged an earlier home loss to Jamestown College tonight, 69-51, and in the process, earned themselves a DAC Tournament semi-final home game against Minot State Wednesday night.
At the half, the Hawks only led 31-24, but things were about to change. DSU sank 16-of-27 (52%) of their field goals after intermission and put up 38 more points, fueled by good shot-selection and selfless passing (nine assists). Meanwhile, the Blue Hawk defense made the Jimmies blue as they could counter with just eight successful field goals in 23 attempts (35%). Both teams shot just 25% from behind the three-point arc, but this statistic was particularly damaging to JC’s hopes for victory, because--if for no other reason--they shot 24 long ones (making six) to just 12 attempts (making three) for the Hawks.
Sean Burnham was the leading scorer for the Blue Hawks with 15 points and was four-of-five in field goal shooting in the second half. Tomaul Hawkins checked in with 11 points (three-of-five in second half) and also led the team in both rebounds with nine and assists with four. DSU also got a big lift from Brian Lebsock who is barely averaging three points per game, but put up 10 tonight on four-of-five shooting. He added five rebounds too and in general, gave Head Coach Ty Orton much stability at the guard position though Lebsock only played 18 minutes. Younger brother Nate scored just eight points, about five points under his season average, but he did grab five rebounds and had three assists and no turnovers.
Another key contributor was Fred Scheltinga. His playing time was also limited (20 minutes), but he was a presence on both ends of the floor. Scheltinga was a perfect four-of-four from the field and had 10 points and he recovered nine rebounds. He was also a focal point of the Hawks’ post-passing as guards Burnham and the Lebsock pair probed and eventually splintered the Jamestown defense.
DSU will host Minot State on Wednesday; tip-off set for 7:30 pm in a game that sets the stage for the DAC Tournament championship game. The two teams split their two-game season series with both teams winning their road contest.
