by Ryan Platt
March-03-10

The Dickinson State University Blue Hawk Athletic Department is pleased to announce the 2009-10 Men’s Basketball All DAC Teams and Post-Season Awards recipients for the Blue Hawks.

The Blue Hawks finished the DAC Men’s Basketball race in 3rd place with a conference record of 9-4. Head Men’s Basketball Coach Ty Orton was deservedly named DAC Coach of the Year by his colleagues.

Nathan Lebsock, a 6’1” guard from Frenchtown, MT was named to the All DAC 1st Team. For the season Lebsock averaged 17.21 points per game, shot 41% from the field, scored 482 total points, averaged 2.7 assists per game, and had over one steal a game.

Matthew Lee, a 6’6” Forward form Ogden, UT was named to the All DAC 2nd Team. For the season Lee averaged 10.44 points per game, scored 261 total points, shot 67% from the field, had 6.6 blocks per game, 165 total rebounds, and .4 blocks per game.

Nathan Lebsock Drives Around Defender

It was another Dickinson State University - South Dakota School of Mines nail biting men’s basketball game tonight at Scott Gym; with Mines edging out the Blue Hawks in overtime 77-71. This was the first round of the DAC Conference Tournament with Mines coming in as the 6th seed and the Blue Hawks as the number 3 seed. In the two previous meetings between the teams Dickinson State edged out the Hardrockers in closely contested games.

Both teams played well but a slight edge in shooting percentage (.491-.431), bench scoring (29-15), and fewer turnovers (13-16) gave Mines an upset win over the Blue Hawks. The Blue Hawks led at the half by only a single point and had a seven point lead with a little less than two minutes to go in the game. However, the Hardrockers were able to sink some contested perimeter shots and send the game into overtime. In overtime the Blue Hawks were not able to generate any offense and were outscored 7-1.

The Blue Hawks were led by Matthew Lee’s 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Nathan Lebsock had 19 points, 4 assists, and one steal. John Hanstad finished with 15 points, while Brandon Thomas pulled down 10 rebounds.

DSU Overwhelms Minot State with Remarkable 2nd Half, 98-75
by Galen Morton, SID

Matt Lee played strong all night and here he takes it to the rack for two of his 25 points.

It was not a perfect game, but it probably felt like it. Dickinson State (13-12, 8-4) sprinted neck-and-neck with Minot State through the game’s first 20 minutes and they both leaned at the break, deadlocked at 41-41. But that’s when the Blue Hawks cranked it up a notch or maybe two or three and tore past the Beavers with a 57-point second half scoring spree and pulled away for a critical DAC win at Scott Gym, 98-75. The Blue Hawks slipped past MSU into a 2nd place tie with Valley City State and one game behind Black Hills State with two to play.

With 26 turnovers on the DSU side of the ledger one can only imagine how high the roof might be for the Hawks if in fact they did play a perfect game. Shooting 19-of-25 (76%) in the second half is unheard of but that’s what Dickinson State did tonight and finished the game with a 34-of-52 (65%) shooting accuracy from the field.

With ninety-eight points there’s plenty to share and that’s exactly what the Hawks did. Four players finished in double figures. Nate Lebsock was the highest score with 26 tallies but right in stride with him was Matt Lee. He made several nice plays, in his aggressive and physical style, so it might be easy to overlook the eye-brow raising fact that he sank 10 of his 11 field goals.

His 12 boards powered DSU to a huge advantage in that category, 39 to 23. It is also amazing that the Blue Hawks recaptured 16 of their offensive misses when, including free-throws, there were only 30 available.

Josh Henry stuck five of his seven field goals and all seven of his charity tosses for his 17 points; Ryan Ernst canned four-of-five from long distance and finished with 14 points. Henry had seven rebounds too and was often the lone man under the hoop or the outlet man when MSU tried to pressure DSU’s guards.

The defensive pressure actually came from the Hawks. It was especially evident in the second half when Minot State’s shooting went cold, 10-of-36 (28%) and they delivered on just two of their 10 long range bombs. MSU was also flustered into committing 31 fouls and by game’s end, they had three players disqualified via five fouls and two other Beavers were sitting on four fouls. DAC high-scorer Nick Turner did get his share of points, 19 to be exact, but he only played 30 minutes before fouling out.

Brian Lebsock’s eight assists led a DSU crew that passed out 22 total. Five of these came from Henry while another four were delivered off the hands of Nate Lebsock.
