Coston delivers annual State of the University Address

Dr. D.C. Coston, president of Dickinson State University, delivered the State of the University Address Wednesday, Aug. 20 in Beck Auditorium, Klinefelter Hall. The address was part of the annual faculty and staff orientation.
Coston began the address by highlighting several current successes of the university including the Department of Nursing’s recent letter stating that the baccalaureate in nursing degree was afforded the maximum eight year continuing accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN); the Theodore Roosevelt Digital Library cataloguing over 20,000 documents; and the positive reviews of the recently released book on Ulysses S. Grant by Dr. Frank Varney, assistant professor of history.
Coston then transitioned into addressing three main areas:
“We could not hope to have a more positive report than we received from the HLC visit earlier this year. They commented that DSU has actively and effectively addressed every area of concern,” said Coston.
Coston reaffirmed that while the institution remains on notice by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), DSU is accredited and that the institution is “cautiously optimistic” the Commissions’ Board will take DSU off notice during its fall meeting.
Before completing a leadership course that Coston taught last semester, he asked the students to describe the institution in their own words. Coston shared that students described faculty and staff as “friendly, knowledgeable and helpful” as well as having “high standards and expectations for students.” Additionally, students noted that the institution was “committed to diversity and helping Dickinson and the surrounding communities.” Coston observed that this closely parallels the University’s mission statement. The institution has affirmed its long-standing core values, which are integrity, accessibility, excellence, inquiry and innovation.
Answering the Call
The institution is taking steps in defining a strategic enrollment plan to help with recruitment and retention of students, enhancing opportunities for online and distance education, providing programs that fit the lifestyles of traditional and non-traditional students, and making ourselves more prominent in regional high schools in the surrounding area.
Coston concluded his address by emphasizing that DSU faculty and staff will continue to implement creative and innovative educational programs including answering the region’s and the nation’s call to increase college degree attainment by adults.
