HRWC presents reading and book signing by Dr. Frank Varney Dec. 10

Shanna Shervheim, interim associate director of communications (701) 483-2595

The Heart River Writers’ Circle at Dickinson State University will host a reading and book signing by author Dr. Frank Varney on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. in Beck Auditorium, Klinefelter Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Varney is an assistant professor of history and the director of the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program at DSU. He is also the author of “General Grant and the Rewriting of American History,” published by Savas-Beatie, LLC in 2013. The work is a reconsideration of Ulysses S. Grant’s memoirs and the Civil War battles they describe.

In his book, Varney argues convincingly that Grant’s celebrated memoirs may be historically inaccurate and further conjectures that Grant may purposely have altered the historical record as it pertains to Civil War figures and significant battles. His book was recently reviewed by Civil War author Ed Bonekemper for the monthly newsletter “Civil War News.” The review states, in part, “Professor Varney sheds new light on what really happened on some of the Civil War’s most important battlefields. He does so by focusing much of his work on Grant’s treatment of Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans, a capable army commander whose reputation Grant (and others working with him) conspired to destroy.”

Varney will read selections from his work, talk about the process of writing historical scholarship and answer audience questions. His book will be available for purchase and signing.

Heart River Writers' Circle brings to the West River area significant, contemporary writers whose work interests a range of readers on the northern plains. Each writer gives a public reading and meets with students and community members to discuss issues germane to writing. By coordinating such visits, as well as by hosting literary events and discussions, the Circle serves as a resource for those interested in writing as vocation or avocation. The Circle, which supports all community literary activities, including the use of libraries, is sponsored by Stoxen Library and DSU's Department of Language and Literature.
