Pete Stanton enters his ninth year as the head men and women’s track and field coach at Dickinson State. Stanton is a DSU alumnus. While at DSU, he was an outstanding athlete on both the football and track teams in the mid-80’s, receiving All-American honors in football in 1987 and participating in the 1987 NAIA National Track and Field championships in the hurdles.

Stanton’s track and field team reached the ultimate pinnacle at the 2006 NAIA Outdoor Championships when his men’s team won their third consecutive National title to go along with championships in 2005 and 2004. The men’s program became only the fourth in the history of the NAIA to win three consecutive championships. In addition, his 2008, 2007 and 2003 men’s team was NAIA National Runners-up. Stanton was honored for his team’s achievements by being named 2006, 2005, 2004, and 2003 NAIA Men’s Outdoor National Track and Field Coach-of-the-Year. 2008 marked the sixth consecutive year the team has been first or second at national meets.

In 2002, his men’s team won the DAC conference championship for the first time since 1969. The Hawks went on to the national meet and placed sixth (the highest place ever at the time for a Dickinson State track team). For his efforts, Stanton was named the 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, and 2002  DAC men’s outdoor track and field coach-of-the-year. His 2005 men’s indoor team claimed their first ever indoor title. In 2006 and 2007, his men’s indoor team added two more conference titles and place third at the national meet, the highest finish ever for an indoor team during Stanton’s tenure. Stanton was named 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2005 DAC indoor men’s coach of the year. The women finished third at the 2002 and 2005 DAC-10 indoor and outdoor and second in the 2006 outdoor championships. He was named the 2002 DAC women’s indoor track and field coach-of-the-year. The women finished 18th at the 2007 National meet, its highest finish ever.

Stanton has coached 123 All-Americans and 32 individual national champions during his first eight seasons as head coach. In addition, many school records have fallen during the tenure of Stanton. The women have broken 14 and the men 16 school records in the past six years. In addition, the men’s 4x400 set a new NAIA national indoor record of 3:11.99 at the 2006 championships.
