The Blue Hawk Tournament will feature four games on Friday, September third and four games of Saturday, September fourth.

The Blue Hawks are coming off of a very successful weekend at the Montana Tech/War Bonnet Tournament, in which three of their members swept the first round of honors for the Dakota Athletic Conferences players of the week. Blue Hawk Volleyball members Ruth Johnson, Kristina Eric, and Rebecca Johnson are the hitter, setter, and libero of the week for August 30- September 5, 2010.

Hitter: Ruth Johnson; Dickinson State; Junior; Outside Hitter; Prince George, BC ~ Johnson hit .415 with 32 kills (3.20/game), nine digs (0.90/game), three solo blocks (0.30/game) and 11 assist blocks (1.10/game).

Black Hills State University is in the Dakota Athletic Conference for the last year as they make the transition to NCAA Division II next season. The Yellow Jackets won the 2009 Dakota Athletic Conference Tournament last season and return 2009 1st Team All DAC, Senior, Outside Hitter Maggie O’Neil. Black Hills was picked to finish second in the 2010 DAC pre-season power polls and is returning O’Neil and four other starters from its successful 2009 championship.

Montana State University Northern has started off this season on a tear winning four of its first six games. They have one of the most senior laden teams in the Frontier Conference with five returning senior starters. The Lights are led by senior 2009 Frontier All-Conference member Kaylee Bossert, a 6’0” tall Middle Blocker that uniquely plays front row and back row.

The Bemidji State University Beavers are led by first year head coach Wayne Chadwick, 6’0” senior, middle blocker Nicole Olson and 5’9” senior, outside hitter Lindsey Weyer. Chadwick joins the Beavers after a three-year stint as the assistant coach at NCAA Division I University of Tulsa. The Beavers also have five returning starting seniors and a large junior class.

Head Blue Hawk Volleyball Coach Ryan Platt was very pleased with the weekend and the awards for the three team members. “We are very proud and excited for our three players and their deserved awards. They each played great all weekend as well as the rest of our Blue Hawk team. All three players are new members this season and the amazing fact that two of these players are freshman tells the coaching staff that we are on the right recruiting path. It’s exciting to have all of these new players mesh into our program and now that we have a rotation that gels it will get very exciting soon. I am going to have to check into it, but this might the first time that a DAC volleyball team has swept all three spots. Congratulations to Ruth, Kristina, and Rebecca.”

Last Day of the Montana Tech Tournament Helps Blue Hawk Volleyball Find Great Chemistry

Freshman Libero Rebecca Johnson

On the last day of the Montana Tech Tournament the Blue Hawks find continuity while in search of starting lineup. With the Blue Hawks added depth this season it has led to various line ups to find the one that would maximize the individual abilities of the players, for the benefit of the team. Blue Hawks volleyball head coach Ryan Platt feels that the lineup used in the last game of the tournament worked great. Facing Montana State University Northern, a team that defeated Preseason DAC favorite Jamestown College (3-1) the week prior, the Blue Hawks narrowly lost to MSU Northern in 5 games: 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 11-15. This was also without the Blue Hawks “big gun” 6’2” Ruth Johnson; who was resting a slight muscle pull.

Leading the team was Courtney Trustem with 14 kills (.278), Jennifer Hartman with 12 (.240), Iva Cepic with 7 (.238), and three others with 6 kills each: Trina West, Karen Almeida, and Crystal Franklin. Setter Kristina Eric had 32 assists, 1 ace serve, and 10 digs; while her counterpart Whitley Abrahamson had 21 assists, 1 ace serve, and 8 digs. Freshman Libero Rebecca Johnson led the team with 34 digs, followed closely by freshman defensive specialist Kaitlyn Christianson with 20. The much improved blocking of the Blue Hawks was led by Jennifer Hartman’s 7 blocks, Karen Almeida’s 7, Courtney Trustem 5, Trina West 5, Crystal Franklin 4, and Iva Cepic with 3.

The Blue Hawks are off the road for a while as they will be hosting the Blue Hawk Tournament next weekend.
