Jessica Nieves’ 18-point outburst led the Blue Hawks to their second consecutive Dakota Athletic Conference win against Mayville State University Saturday at Scott Gym, 61-51.
The Hawks celebrated the efforts of their departing seniors--Dawn Boyd, Katie Schwartz, Jennifer Marquez, Jessica Talbert and Kia Herbel--but trailed at the half 34-33. The Comets hit 13-of-27 (48%) as compared to 11-of-28 (39%) for DSU. MSU also knocked down four of their 10 three-point attempts.
DSU tightened their defense after the break and outscored the Comets 28-17 the rest of the way.
Nieves was all over the floor despite playing just 27 minutes. She stepped-up into seven-of-10 shooting (one-for-one on her threes), three-of-four from the line, five rebounds and two assists. It was a much needed boost for her to come off the bench, even though the Blue Hawks had ended their four game slide the night before, DSU was happy to maintain their winning ways.
Both Herbel and Kylee Bittner, another reserve, canned 10 points and were the only other Hawks to reach double figures.
DSU broke-down MSU after the break, even though the teams tied with 29 rebounds a piece, the Comets shot just five-of-22 (23%) after halftime. Meanwhile, the Blue Hawks maintained their intensity and put in nine-of-19 (47%) and finished with a game accuracy of 43% (20-of-47). DSU tried 12 long-range shots but hit on only three of them.
Teryl Norton led the Blue Hawks in rebounding with six. Besides Nieves, Herbel also grabbed five boards and both Amber Adams and Marquez pulled in four.

It took an overtime session but the extra five minutes were a reward that the Blue Hawks needed tonight in Scott Gym as they defeated Dakota State University, 73-64.
Amber Adams’ 18 points, 13 of which came in the 2nd half, helped pave the way for the Hawks who evened their Dakota Athletic Conference record at 5-5. Adams was three-of-five from three-point territory and also pulled in seven rebounds and had three assists.
Kelsey Boedeker had her struggles from the field, but no worries for the DSU as she dished out five assists and Jessica Nieves’ 10 points, Kylee Bittner’s nine (all in the first half) and Teryl Norton’s eight filled in quite nicely in the scoring. Nieves also had five assists of the team’s 18. Blue Hawk super center Kia Herbel had a solid 17 points and a thunderous 15 boards. The Hawks pounded Dakota State inside, out-rebounding them 43-33 including a sizeable 27-18 advantage after intermission.
The first half held much promise for DSU, sprinting to an 18-8 lead after eight minutes. Enter the Lady T’s offense. In the next 12 minutes on the floor, the Hawks endured a 25-5 about face and entered the locker not in control of the affair, but trailing by 10 at 33-23.
DSU turned the game around even though it took the extra period to do so. The Blue Hawks put in a modest 14-of-33 (42%) shots in the second half, but the Lady T’s struggled. Their 12-of-42 (29%) field goal shooting was buoyed only slightly by their five-of-11 (45%) from long distance.
A back in forth game in the second stanza came down to the wire. DSU had a chance to ice the game in regulation but missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw. The Lady’s T’s tied the score at 59 apiece with :09 remaining. A desperation attempt from the corner by Norton could not find the mark and the teams headed for overtime, the Hawks’ second in a row.
A quick three by Adams set the tone for the extra time and the Hawks, who never trailed again, went on to out-score Dakota State 14-5 to claim the victory.

Amber Adams steadies herself for a three-point atttempt led the Blue Hawks with 25 points in two games

It was a tough weekend for the Blue Hawks. In fact it has been a tough two weekends. After losses to Valley City State University and Jamestown College, DSU (12-10, 4-5) has now dropped four games in succession after winning the previous six.
Head Coach Andre Goldberg does not seem flustered. “We are doing the same kind of things that we were doing when we were winning. We have been getting good looks [at the basket].” Not the voice of panic, and certainly the Hawks will have many more opportunities to pull themselves out of this mid-DAC slump.
Amber Adams had 13 points against Valley City State on Friday to lead the team, but DSU still fell 55-53. Kia Herbel had 10 points and seven rebounds and Kelsey Boedeker also chipped in with 10 points. Dickinson State committed 25 turnovers to just 13 for the Vikings.
Against the Jimmies on Saturday, the Hawks fell 63-59 in overtime. They led 27-23 at the break but could not hold back a Jamestown squad that put in 43% of their field goals (12-of-28) after intermission including 63% (five-of-eight) of their three-pointers.
DSU out boarded the Jimmies 32-30 with Herbel’s nine pacing the team. She also scored nine points and was one of six Blue hawks who had between six and nine tallies. Adams again led DSU with 12 points and she also had three rebounds. Boedeker was the team leader with nine on the weekend.
DSU plays at home on February 5th and 6th, hoisting Dakota State on Friday and then Mayville State on Saturday.
