Dickinson State University is pleased to announce that Megan Auch of Corvallis, Mont., has signed a Letter of Intent to run cross-country for the Blue Hawks. Her proud parents are Marty and Kim Auch.

Auch has enjoyed an outstanding prep career for the Blue Devils excelling in cross-country, basketball and softball. With the help of her prep coaches Joanne Cleveland and Mark Yoakam, Auch’s best 5K time is 21:10.

She is excited to be coming to Dickinson State because she “loved the school, town and coaches… the community reminds me of our community, everybody knows everyone.”

DSU Head Cross-country Coach Thadd O’Donnell is delighted to have Auch join the Blue Hawks. “She has shown a lot of promise as a prep athlete and will undoubtedly continue to improve at the collegiate level. It will be great to have her in our line-up too because she will add much depth to the women’s team,” said Coach O’Donnell.

Auch acknowledges that there are tough challenges ahead in cross-country, stating “Cross country is still something I'm new to and I love the challenge. I want to see how good I can get because I have never had the chance to and it is the most rewarding sport.”

At Dickinson State Auch will likely head toward majoring in nursing or dental hygiene.

Vanessa Esquivel makes it official

Dickinson State University is pleased to announce that Vanessa Esquivel of Citrus College in Glendora, Calif., has signed a Letter of Intent to run cross-country and track and field for the Blue Hawks.

She was a top performer at Citrus under the tutelage of retiring Head Cross-country Coach Maury Greer. However, she was also coached “conservatively, maybe 30-40 miles per week” with the Owls and Coach Greer is confident that Esquivel has much untapped talent. “Besides getting a good athlete, Dickinson State is getting a real good person. She will do the right things and pursue her degree,” he added.

Esquivel has run 18:42 in a 5K cross-country race and in the 1500 meters in track, she has clocked 5:00.02.

DSU Head Cross-country Coach Thadd O’Donnell expresses much enthusiasm for Esquivel’s future: “She will be one of the top runners in the Dakota Athletic Conference and on target to be a force at the national meet. We are excited to have her join our program and to have her train with our established runners.”

Esquivel is a talented runner, but much of her success is attributable to her attitude. She is inspired by the words of Paul “Bear” Bryant, recalling, “If you believe in yourself, have dedication and pride and never quit, you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high, but so are the rewards."

Seniors Sammy Chavez and Rayel McPeters represented DSU at the 2009 NAIA Cross Country National Championships today at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, in Vancouver, Wash.

Chavez completed the 8K course in 26:42 and finished 124th out of 323 total finishers. McPeters’ 5K mark of 20:48 was good enough for 218th out of 330 women who completed the race. Chavez averaged 5:23 per mile, while McPeters’ average per mile time was 6:42.

Earlier, McPeters added her name, along with teammates Vanessa Escobar and Lorin Maki, to the list of NAIA Women’s Cross Country Academic All-Americans. A total of 254 women were honored nation-wide.

On a soggy and mostly flat course, Silas Kisorio of Oklahoma Christian University took individual honors in the men’s competition, winning in a remarkable time of 24:23. Runner-up Carison Kemei (McKendree University) was just a step back in 24:24. Aaron Melhorn (Malone University) was the 3rd place finisher and he led Pioneers to their third consecutive team title with 44 points. Second place Concordia University (Neb.) was well back with 166 points.

Justyna Mudy (Shorter College) won the women’s race in 17:30 by a nearly comfortable 21 seconds over Jacky Kipwambok (Azusa Pacific University). Team honors went to California State University-San Marcos, totaling 137 points, just three points better than in-state rival Biola University.
