Tutoring Defined

What is peer tutoring?

At Dickinson State, peer tutoring refers to instructional, educational sessions with a fellow student. Trained peer tutors with subject area expertise provide one-on-one informal academic support to other DSU students. If you’re struggling with one class in particular, talk with a peer tutor.

Tutoring Appointments

Do I need to make an appointment?

Appointments are not required. However, there is no guarantee a tutor will be available unless you make an appointment, but students are welcome to stop by anytime and check.

How do I make an appointment?

To make an appointment, you can stop by May 209, call 701-483-2122, or email dsu.tutoringcenter@dicknsonstate.edu.

How long does a tutoring session last?

Generally, students can make a 30 minute appointment. If you need more time, you can make additional appointments. If you wish, you can even set up regular weekly appointments. Contact us for help with scheduling.

Are sessions one-on-one or in groups?

We specialize in one-on-one tutoring. However, for some courses, group tutoring can be beneficial. Contact us if you’re interested in participating in a group tutoring session.

Where do sessions take place?

Most sessions take place in the Tutoring Center in May Hall, room 206, but sometimes at alternate locations as noted on tutoring hours schedule posted outside the Tutoring Center and can be verified by emailing the tutor.

How much does a sessions cost?

Tutoring services are included in your tuition fees, so there is no additional cost.

What if I can’t make it to an appointment?

If you can’t make it to an appointment, please cancel it as soon as possible by calling the Tutor Center at 701-483-2122, emailing the tutor, or the Tutoring Center at dsu.tutoringcenter@dickinsonstate.edu. If you need assistance, please contact us or stop by the Tutoring Center.

Is attending class required for tutoring?

Yes. You must be attending a course on a regular basis in order to request a tutor for it.

How do I prepare for my tutoring session?

Bring everything you need to work on your assignment your session. This might include your assignment sheet, your textbook, source materials, and so on. Also, bring something to write with and something to write on. You should come prepared with questions about the subject or assignment you’d like help with, and expect your tutor to assist you and guide you, not do the work for you.

What if I need tutoring when the Tutoring Center isn’t open?

NetTutor is available 24/7 , free of charge, and is embedded into each Blackboard course.

What if I have general questions? Who do I contact?

The Tutoring Center is a part of the SOAR Center. The Tutoring Center Specialist is:
